Preston Sumner drove in four runs on three hits to lead Collierville past Clay (OH) 9-0 on Saturday. Sumner doubled in the fifth scoring two, walked in the fifth scoring one, and hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh scoring one.
Colton Cordell went the distance on the mound, throwing seven innings on the way to a shutout. The sophomore struck out 5.
The Dragons jumped out to the lead in the top of the fifth inning with a big rally. Sumner doubled, driving in two runs, followed by Parker Burleson’s single that scored another run. Jacob Caruso and Houston Jenkins each singled, bringing in a run apiece. Thomas Starrett hit into a fielder’s choice, scoring one more run, and Eli Stewart added a single for another RBI. Sumner capped the inning by drawing a walk, scoring the final run of the frame.
The Dragons tallied 13 hits in the game. Jenkins, Stewart, and Caruso each collected multiple hits. Collierville didn't commit a single error in the field. Hudson Snell had the most chances in the field with seven.
Collierville will travel to Munford to begin District 15-AAAA play on Monday.
